Alfred Flournoy papers, 1824-1935.

Papers (bound, typed copies) consist of correspondence, newspaper clippings, and biographical sketches of family members. Letters written from Natchitoches, La., and Amite County, Miss., to his wife relate the difficulties in selling his slaves (1824). Letters to Flournoy from Congressman James K. Polk pertain to a pension bill related to disabilities received in the War of 1812; a request for a list of residents in his county; and support of Andrew Jackson in the U. S. Senate. Family correspondence relates to problems in running a plantation (1838), and Flournoy's advice to his sons on their careers (1852). Additionally, there is a letter from Alexander Mouton requesting support in his gubernatorial campaign (1842). Civil War letters, primarily between Alfred Flournoy, Jr. and family members, reflect the attitudes of people at home.
